Beyond the kitchen – expanding the school food landscape to outdoor and non-traditional spaces

“Beyond the Kitchen,” challenges participants to expand their understanding of what school food can be—and where it can happen. Designed for high school contexts, this session shares practical models for cooking and food literacy programming in outdoor and non-traditional spaces, grounded in our experience delivering programming in northern and urban settings. This workshop will share tools and programs that Roots Community Food Centre has developed to meaningfully engage youth from different cultural backgrounds in experiential, outdoor food programming, offering entry points for people who have never cooked outdoors to people who have always cooked outdoors.
Bio:
AIRIN STEPHENS is the Program Director at Roots CFC in Thunder Bay. Her work focuses on community-centered food initiatives as it relates to employment and education with youth and adults. Airin brings a passion for the natural environment together with her commitment to social justice to create culturally relevant pedagogy for the youth in the Roots CFC programs Airin has helped Roots CFC successfully navigate local public health regulations so they can serve wild game in school programs.
