Growing Food, Growing Children: Early Learning and Food Sovereignty in Pond Inlet

This presentation shares the work of Pirurvik Preschool Society in Pond Inlet, Nunavut. Our early childhood program is rooted in Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and community food knowledge. We are developing a greenhouse and beginning land-based learning opportunities with children. Children help grow food, learn from Elders, and strengthen their connection with the land. This work explores how preschool food access can be strengthened through Indigenous knowledge, community leadership, and learning with young children.
Bio:
DINA ARREAK is the Chair of the Pirurvik Preschool Society in Pond Inlet, Nunavut. She supports early childhood education and family wellness within her community. Dina works closely with children, families, and Elders, supporting land-based learning, language revitalization, and cultural activities. She also helps guide food programming at Pirurvik Preschool.
SARAH ARREAK is an emerging horticulturalist in Pond Inlet, Nunavut. She leads the greenhouse initiative with Pirurvik Preschool Society and is beginning food-growing work in Arctic conditions, starting with microgreens. Sarah supports children and educators through hands-on learning experiences that connect food, education, and community.
